''Last Window'' introduces an "Ignore" feature which allows the player to let go the lines of questioning they don't find useful. Ignoring too many lines of questioning, as well as not ignoring enough, may cause an early game over. The player can also get a game over if Kyle says something that can get him in trouble, gets caught with something that isn't his, or is caught within a restricted area by the landlady.

The game also introduces a new mechanic of interaction with the items, where the player can "Combine" two items to obtain a new one, thus offering new avenues of solving puzzles.

A new story-based feature is the ''Last Window: The Secret of Cape West'' in-game novel. Every time a chapter of the game is cleared, a new chapter in the novel is made available. The contents of the book complements the game's story, and they can be influenced by the decisions the player makes.

The player can unlock a "Pinkie Rabbit Land" mini-game by either completing the story or by winning it in an optional in-game prize-contest. The game is in the style of a handheld electronic game from the time period of ''Last Window'', based around fictional cartoon character "Pinkie Rabbit". Post-game, the player also unlocks the ability to play the 9-ball mini-game whenever they want.

Last Window: The Secret of Cape West, released in Japan as Last Window: Mayonaka no Yakusoku (ラストウィンドウ 真夜中の約束, lit. "Last Window: Midnight Promise"), is an adventure game developed by Cing and published by Nintendo in 2010 for the Nintendo DS. It is a sequel to Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and the second game in the Kyle Hyde Saga.

Last Window is the last game that was developed by Cing, which filed for bankruptcy in March 2010.

Gameplay[]

Last Window is a hybrid of a visual novel game and a mystery/adventure puzzle-solving game. Like its predecessor, many of the features of the last game, such as holding the Nintendo DS vertically like a book, walking and examining 3D areas, interacting and interrogating with characters, solving puzzles and obtaining items, are still present.

Last Window introduces an "Ignore" feature which allows the player to let go the lines of questioning they don't find useful.

A new story-based feature is the Last Window: The Secret of Cape West in-game novel.

The game is in the style of a handheld electronic game from the time period of Last Window, based around fictional cartoon character "Pinkie Rabbit". Post-game, the player also unlocks the ability to play the 9-ball mini-game whenever they want.

Synopsis[]

The game's story takes place one year after that of its predecessor. Unlike the first game, Last Window is set across several days instead of one night.

On December 18th, 1980, Kyle Hyde learns from his boss, Ed Vincent, that he gets fired from Red Crown. Back at the Cape West Apartments, Kyle finds a mysterious letter instructing him to find an object called the Scarlet Star. Further investigations during the course of the game reveal more information on the murder at the former Hotel Cape West 13 years ago as well as why Kyle's father Chris Hyde was killed 25 years ago.

Music[]

The music in the game was composed by Satoshi Okubo and Yuhki Mori. There was no official soundtrack for the game, although fans ripped it and used the song names from the jukebox.

Reception[]

Last Window received generally positive reviews. It received better reviews from critics than Hotel Dusk; when the website Gamerankings used to exist, Last Window had 80/100 while Hotel Dusk had 78/100.

Despite still enjoying the game for the most part, the general playerbase actually has the opposite opinion compared to the critics, and consider Last Window to be worse than Hotel Dusk. For example, a poll was held and only about 1/3 of players consider Last Window to be the better game.[1]

While many players do not think Last Window is a bad game by any means, a portion of Hotel Dusk fans feel that the story of Last Window is more unmemorable in comparison, with less likable and less interesting characters. At one point, Kyle even mentions he's "sick" of everyone.[2] Some of the prominent characters in the game, such as Betty Meyer, lack much backstory. A common issue noted by many players is that after finishing the game, they eventually struggle to remember the game's plot beats and what the arcs of the characters were about.
